DYSDERA CROCATA |
Fig 1 |
ADULT: With its distinctive silvery grey abdomen and chestnut cephalothorax from which arise the gingery legs this creature is an under-rated stunner. The jaws are relatively massive for feeding on millipedes and woodlice and a bite from one can be quite painful. Only has 6 eyes whereas most spiders have eight. BEHAVIOUR: Awaits its prey beneath chosen cover and when disturbed seems in no hurry to flee. HABITAT: Common throughout and widespread. DISTRIBUTION: In gardens within compost heaps, under stones and logs and other debris. Also coastal grassy areas where occasional ground cover occurs. PERIOD: All year round.
