DESCRIPTION: Length 9 - 11mm. A coppery-brown beetle with a black head and bulging eyes. Almost hairless and spending 2 years of its life in the grub stage which feeds on various grass roots. The elytra are finely grooved. BEHAVIOUR: Fast moving and attracted to light and also sap leaking from wounded trees. Flies from dusk onwards. DISTRIBUTION: Common throughout. HABITAT: Seen in gardens, parks, woodland hedges and hedgerows with a preference for sandy soils. PERIOD: July to August.
