FUNGALPUNK GIG REVIEWS |
I am met in London by Alex Lyng from Oiz ii Men and Punk 4 The Homeless then we turn up at the splendid but small venue which is The Stags Head. The Outbursts, who are a four piece of old punks who don't take themselves too seriously despite being expert musicians, kick off the evening with a half hour set of irreverent late 70's sounding punk with touches of 60's garage. The guys don't mind offending and have a wonderfully dark sense of humour. Experience tells with The Outbursts in two ways, firstly they play three chord punk as tight as anyone, secondly they have been involved in the music world so long that they know what a load of bollox the music business is so they chill out anyway and enjoy what they do for the sole purpose of enjoying what they do. The Outbursts are fun, enjoy them. Eagle Spits spat some poetry and talked about street children (see below). The Lone Groover - Acoustic folk punk? Protest music? A love relationship with The Clash? Probably all of the above and more. The Lone Groover played with passion and commitment. Dressed sharply and machine gunned us with his Gibson. Finely tuned craftsmanship and song writing. Tales of social revolution and a love for subculture. Tonight the groover rocked, turned out some sweet vibes and covered ‘Career Opportunities’, what more could anyone want? Alex Johnson - Wonk Unit are popular with good reason, they put on a great show and churn out some wonderful tunes. Tonight we are treated to some of those songs but stripped down to one man and his guitar. The set is kicked off with ‘Horses’, a surreal number about staring out the widow at horses in their winter clothes and being glad you’re not a pony - SWEET. Later on listening to the man Alex lament the fact that he is the donkey of the damned, it is clear that there are elements to being a builder that he doesn't like. He does however like following cute bottoms with his eyes up escalators. Un-PC- yes, yes, thank goodness yes! His set is gripping, quirky, talent full and way too short. But hey its Sunday and we have to stop the live music by 10pm so a 30 minute set will have to suffice but we look forward to the next time. So another good evening followed by a very long day. I am shattered. I haven’t been well. So why bother. We have choices, street children seldom do. Casa Alianza give them a chance, a home, a future. So we continue and help where we can. Despite what the authorities may think, children are children - not vermin. So download our massive compilation and come to a gig. Here’s some info about the comp and charity, followed by a link to download the thing - cheers Punk Rock is another word for freedom, Punk has always been difficult to define but basically Punk 4 The Homeless has always been of the view that if anyone wants to play a gig for us or donate a track and they are punk enough to do so we are punk enough to accept. So with the release of these massive compilations we maintain the same attitude. Many of the tracks the general public may well consider to be of the punk genre, a few they wouldn’t, but it’s all punk to us. Most of us involved with Punk 4 The Homeless are no longer kids but we still have the attitude that we CAN change the world and we are determined to make a difference “be the change you want to see in the world” (Ghandi). So we have got punk, ska punk, ska, folk punk, non punk, horror punk, etc., all to help our friends Casa Alianza help the kids. These bands come from all over the place, some names you will recognize some you won’t, here’s a handful from the compilations containing over 120 bands, Sex Presley’s, London, Grave Robber, Gerry Leonard, Spooky Ghost (also from David Bowie s band), Skinwalkers, Zooparty (feat Glen Matlock from The Sex Pistols), Wonk Unit, Billy Karloff, Subculture, Leather Zoo, Drongos For Europe, The Nags, The Reverends, 2 Sick Monkeys, Shag Nasty, plus absolutely loads more.
