ADULT: Wingspan - 90mm. A striking creature with green eyes and an overall black body ringed with yellow-gold bands which make it unmistakable in the field. LARVA: Found partially buried in sediment with only eyes and the tip of the abdomen showing. Fairly large in size and hairy. BEHAVIOUR: A strong flying insect that will give the opportunity for the observer to study as it does perch more often than other similar species. It usually settles low down and can be approached. HABITAT: Prefers flowing streams. Often seen away from water over heaths and moorland. FLIGHT PERIOD: May - September. STATUS: Locally common and seemingly spreading.
