ADULT: Wingspan 45-60mm. Despite the similar
Small Elephant Hawkmoth this is an unmistakable species. The pink
background with olive-green stripes is distinct with the head, thorax
and abdomen of similar colouring. CHRYSALIS: Black, dotted. Located in winter
under moss or within plant debris. LARVA: July to September on a variety of plants especially
willowherbs and bedstraws. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light. HABITAT: Anywhere where rosebay willowherb is
abundant including rough grassland, coastal areas, woodland rides,
hedgerows, gardens and parks. FLIGHT PERIOD: Single brooded. May to July. Occasional second
brood from August to September. STATUS: Resident. Common. |
