ADULT: Wingspan up to 38mm. A smart moth with ochreous forewings that have a rufous tinge and that are decorated by fine white lines and brown streaks. Several small black dots are also present. The hindwings are smoky grey which separates this species from near relatives. LARVA: The larva is brown to greyish ochreous with pale, dark edged lines. It feeds on various grasses and occasionally on sedges and rushes. This species overwinters as a small larva. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light. HABITAT: Found around downland, sand dunes, open woodland, rough grassy areas and sometimes gardens. FLIGHT PERIOD: June to August. STATUS: A fairly common species throughout the British Isles.
