HERALD
SCOLIOPTERYX LIBATRIX
Fig 1
ADULT: Wingspan 35-40mm. Resembling a dead autumnal leaf and with a conspicious bronzey-orange marking on each forewing you would be hard pushed to mis-identify this stocky looking moth. White cross-lines and a scalloped outer edge the Herald is always a nice catch. CHRYSALIS: White and made of silk. Located between two leaves. LARVA: Long, green with yellow lines between each segment. Feeds on willows and other poplars. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light. Can be found during the day amongst leaf litter. In autumn feeds on berries and ivy blossom. HABITAT: Woodlands and gardens. FLIGHT PERIOD: June to November but can be seen all year round as it hibernates in outhouses and cellars. STATUS: Common throughout.
