ADULT: Wingspan - 35 - 45mm. The wavy black crosslines and the chalky white '80' marking on a brownish wing that sometimes has a violet tinge is quite distinctive. A cylindrical posture is held by the moth when at rest. Hindwings are grey. CHRYSALIS: Overwinters as a pupa. LARVA: Grey and white in colour and feeds on Aspen. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light and sugar. HABITAT: Woods, parks and gardens. FLIGHT PERIOD: Single brooded. May to July. STATUS: Common resident in Southern Britain.
