ADULT: Wingspan - 45 - 55mm. A beautifully marked species with males usually darker and coming in shades of brown through to olive green whereas females are generally paler throughout. A robust looking species that cannot be mistaken for anything else. CHRYSALIS: Pupation is relatively short. LARVA: Feeds on primroses, nettles and docks. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light. HABITAT: A preference for wooded areas. FLIGHT PERIOD: Single brooded. July to September. STATUS: Common resident in throughout although scarcer in Scotland.
