ADULT: Wingspan - 35 - 55mm. This is an easily identifiable sexually dimorphic species with the overall size and colour being quite distinct. The male (Fig 1) has a yellow thorax, long grey wings that are striped black at the basal edge. The female has yellow wings that have two dark brown spots on each. CHRYSALIS: Hibernates in this stage in a weak cocoon. LARVA: Feeds on various species of lichen. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light, sugar and flowers. HABITAT: Coastal areas with plenty of lichens. FLIGHT PERIOD: Single brooded. July to September. STATUS: Resident and immigrant in Southern Britain.
