Best times to visit:
Anytime of the year can be rewarding at this small reserve with spring and autumn good for passage birds.
Waterside vegetation and some of the more common plants are likely to be seen with the odd grassland fungi here and there.
The compact size of Old Moor make it an ideal place for visitors both young and old.
Up to 8,000 golden plovers and 2000 lapwings provide a winter wildlife spectacle and the Dearne Valley is an important area for breeding and passage wading birds and wintering wildfowl. RSPB Old Moor also has a 250+ colony of tree sparrows. Various dragon/damselflies frequent the area in summer months and the ponds hold a good selection of mini-beasts.
