Amenities:

Good car parking area that is free of charge. The vistor centre contains a shop and a balcony that overlooks the reserve. A small adventure playground for children is located next to the farmhouse and there is a purpose built classroom that can be used for  educational visits, business meetings etc.  

Opening and Closing Times:

1 November - 31 January: visitor centre open 9.30 am - 4 pm. Gates open until 4.30 pm. 1 February - 31 October: visitor centre open 9.30 am - 5 pm. Gates open until 5.15 pm. The site is closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. RSPB members free; adults £2.50; children £1.25; family ticket £5 (any number of children); concessions £2. Free access from Old Moor to Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council 'Passport to Leisure' and 'Rothercard' cardholders.

Area Description:

This 250 acre reserve is built around several lakes and pools with several hides strategically placed so that the best views can be obtained of all habitats. Reedbeds, bushes and grassland all add to the sites diversity.

Best times to visit:

Anytime of the year can be rewarding at this small reserve with spring and autumn good for passage birds.

Key Flora:

Waterside vegetation and some of the more common plants are likely to be seen with the odd grassland fungi here and there.

The compact size of Old Moor make it an ideal place for visitors both young and old.

Key Fauna:

Up to 8,000 golden plovers and 2000 lapwings provide a winter wildlife spectacle and the Dearne Valley is an important area for breeding and passage wading birds and wintering wildfowl. RSPB Old Moor also has a 250+ colony of tree sparrows. Various dragon/damselflies frequent the area in summer months and the ponds hold a good selection of mini-beasts.
