2nd December 2016 - River Mersey, Stockport, Cheshire - Walking home and 3 fungi species were noted down by the river. Lachnum apalum; Clypeosphaeria mamillana and Terana caerulea were the species scoped and named. |

20th November 2014 - Romiley, Stockport, Cheshire - 2 years ago on the 12th of November (see sightings 2014) me and my good lady popped into a Garden Centre and clocked up a neat list on a small bit of grass that was surrounding the car park. After today's walk we went back, my missus stopped in the car whilst myself and 2 keen group members came for a peek. 29 species in 30 minutes and a few different to last time, oh I do like these obscure spots and it highlights again, fungi are everywhere. 13th November 2016 - Bodnant Gardens, Conwy - Myself and my good lady decided to do a reccie visit in anticipation of a walk next year and so wandered for a couple of hours and knocked up a small list of species. The main idea of the visit was to get to grips with the area and see what the possible best places will be for fruiting bodies. 6th November 2016 - Consall NR, Staffordshire - The last public walk of 2016 and a lovely bunch of folk wandered along and helped towards a list of 100 species identified. I did have a stroll prior to the main walk and added a few extra species but quite a bulk of these were seen on the main walk too so that no-one missed out. 31st October 2016 - Cheadle Cemetary, Stockport, Cheshire - Hanging around a graveyard on Halloween seems most apt although my brief mooch was done in the daytime and in no way was meant to scare anyone. The species seen were few but if I am passing in future I may as well pop in. 29th October 2016 - Mere Sands Wood, Lancashire - One of the nicest places we visit due to its calming nature and subtle offering of many natural wonders. 23rd October 2016 - Tatton Park, Cheshire - A good crowd and a grand walk in lovely weather brought up a total of 107 species of fungi. 12th October 2016 - Heaton Mersey, Stockport, Cheshire - Loreleia postii was added to the year list as I spotted it growing on some liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha) on the way home. |
10th October 2016 - River Mersey, Stockport, Cheshire - A walk into town and a very nice find was the small ascomycete Pulvinula constellatio. It was growing on the path side in sandy soil. After research and microscopy an identification was had. Also seen were a few specimens of Paxillus involutus and a couple of freshly emerging Coprinus comatus. |
9th October 2016 - Arley Hall, Cheshire - A brace of walks today for the fine folk of Arley Hall and, as is the norm at these annual events, the sun was glorious and the temperature set to level 'perfect'. Everytime I turn up for these walks it is glorious weather which is all fine and dandy but does usually mean that things are somewhat dried up. 5th October 2016 - Heaton Mersey, Stockport, Cheshire - 44 specimens of Amanita muscaria were coming through at the side of the main road, 3 specimens of Xerocomus rubellus were noted too and one lone example of Leccinum scabrum had been kicked over. Two fruiting bodies of Agaricus arvensis were at completely different stages! How long these things will last is anyone's guess with peoples phobia and destructive ways plus the council's routine of mowing everything in sight obvious factors to consider. |

2nd October 2016 - Marshall Arms NR, Cheshire - A lovely morning with the sun in all its glory and the company glorious too. 1st October 2016 - Little Budworth, Cheshire - The busiest time of the year with loads of mushroom walks and gigs to sort, attend and lead - and so when the car wouldn't start in the morning it was not the way to begin the mad rush. A neighbour tried jump leads, no joy, we were stuck! The only solution was to a hire car and so after a 2 mile march, a 20 minute wait and a £55 payment we set off to our destination to arrive 45 minutes late and with the group already gone - what to do? Hey ho, why not just go for a stroll and see what we can see? So that is what we did - and then it started raining - what a twat! I don't mind a soaking though so onwards and sideways. 28th September 2016 - Etherow CP, Cheshire - An early morning walk and a real struggle to fing any fungus at all. 18th September 2016 - Anderton NR, Cheshire - 9 of us set off on a fungal walk in conditions that were way too dry for the mycological season. We cracked on and the company was grand but the fruiting bodies just wouldn't play ball and the end list was a struggle to compile. A few good things were noted though and all went away happy (very kind). 31st January 2016 - Deep Hayes CP, Staffordshire - On our way to today's destination we stopped off at a new group members residence and had a look at Cobalt Crust (Terana caerulea) which was a new one for us (thank you Lynne Healey), note was made also of a crop of Geastrum triplex and Resupinatus trichotus. At our destination we manged to see 31 species, these were:- Phragmidium violaceum; Bisporella citrina; Sarcoscypha austriaca; Ascocoryne sarcoides; Crepidotus cesatii; Panellus stipticus; Phellinus igniarius; Taphrina betulina; Ganoderma australe; Bjerkandera adusta; Chondrostereum purpureum; Xylaria carpophila; Auricularia auricula-judae; Nectria cinnabarina; Trametes versicolor; Rhopographus filicinus; Hypoxylon fragiforme; Hypocrea pulvinata; Piptoporus betulinus; Vuilleminia coryli; Trichoderma viride; Hyphodontia sambuci; Stereum gausapatum; Trochila ilicina; Schizopora paradoxa; Datronia mollis; Flammulina velutipes; Stereum hirsutum; Daedaleopsis confragosa; Lycoperdon pyriforme; Peniophora quercina and Vuilleminia comedens. 2 lichenicolous fungi were noted on Xanthoria parietina, these being - Xanthoriicola physcia and Lichenoconium xanthoriae. |

10th January 2016 - Chadkirk Chapel, Stockport, Cheshire - A local walk after a morn of tasks. A few fungi were noted the best of which were:- Hericium erinaceus; Ganoderma applanatum; Lachnum brevipilosum; Calyptella capula; Xylaria carpophila; Hypocrea pulvinata; Neobulgaria pura; Trichoderma viride; Crepidotus mollis; Leptosphaeria doliolum; Bisporella citrina; Calloria neglecta and Gnomonia cerastis. Thanks to assistance on Facebook via Mark Pragnell (cheers sir) the myxo Diderma hemisphaericum was later confirmed. |
9th January 2016 - Festival Park, Lancashire - Another batch of Coprinopsis atramentaria indicated that the fungi just don't know where they are at with this odd weather. Coprinellus disseminatus and Arrhenia retiruga were nice extras. |

5th January 2016 - Bruntwood Park, Stockport, Cheshire - Lots to do, all those pesky chores that mount up so it was another local wander to keep the blood circulating and the noggin enthused. Only 19 species seen today, these being:- Stereum gausapatum; Stereum sanguinolentum; Stereum hirsutum; Sarcomyxa serotina; Ganoderma australe; Bjerkandera adusta; Gymnopilus penetrans; Trametes gibbosa; Rhytisma acerinum; Heterobasidion annosum; Auricularia auricula-judae; Nectria cinnabarina; Trametes versicolor; Hyphodontia sambuci; Dacrymyces stillatus; Exidia glandulosa; Ascocoryne cylichnium; Crepidotus cesatii and Xylaria hypoxylon. Just outside the park about 200 metres along the road a troop of Tricholoma scalpturatum were seen beneath a Silver Birch. |

2nd January 2016 - Cheadle Heath to River Mersey, Cheshire - A few fungi noted after my run down river. Hygrocybe reidii; Chondrostereum purpureum; Daldinia concentrica; Daldinia fissa; Phragmidium violaceum; Puccinia arenariae; Uromyces viciae-fabae and Tubaria furfuracea are unsurprisingly new year sightings - well tis only the second of the month tha' knows. |
1st January 2016 - Nostell Priory NT, W. Yorkshire - And finally, for this opening day of the year, a walk around this National Trust area on the lookout for basically anything. Fungi noted were:- Crepidotus cesatii; Crepidotus epibryus; Ascocoryne cylichnium; Ascocoryne sarcoides; Exidia glandulosa; Pluteus cervinus; Stereum hirsutum; Xylaria hypoxylon; Vuilleminia comedens; Trametes gibbosa; Schizopora paradoxa; Pholiota squarrosa; Lepista nuda; Rhodocollybia butyracea; Exidia thuretiana; Trametes versicolor; Stereum rameale; Nectria cinnabarina; Auricularia auricula-judae; Coprinellus micaceus; Dacrymyces stillatus; Ganoderma applanatum and Stereum gausapatum. The bracket Ganoderma applanatum did cause me some confusion has there was one or two larger spores in the mix but in general spores where of the 8.5 to 9µm range and the flesh was thinner than the spore producing tubes. Add to this the presence of the gall Agathomyia wankowiczii and I am happy with the end identification. |
