ADULT: Wingspan 40-52mm. The forewing is
black with creamy markings. The hindwing is a brilliant red with
black spots. The abdomen is orange with rows of black spots. CHRYSALIS: Found in a loose cocoon in leaf
litter. LARVA: September - May. Feeds on various
herbaceous plants such as willow-herb, nettle and honeysuckle. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light. Has feeding
preference for Buddleia. Will fly throughout the day in hot
weather. HABITAT: Gardens, open bare and waste ground,
hedgerows. FLIGHT PERIOD: Single brooded. July to September. STATUS: Resident. Locally common in southern
England. Possible immigrant. |
