ADULT: Wingspan 45-60mm. Black forewings
with cream-coloured spots. The thorax is wide, furry, black with
creamy shoulder patches. The abdomen is yellow towards the base
with a red tip. Hindwings are yellow with slightly variable black
markings. CHRYSALIS: Flimsy cocoon amongst plant debris. LARVA: Overwinters in this stage feeding in mild
weather. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light but often seen by day. HABITAT: Woodland, coastal areas especially cliffs
and sandhills. FLIGHT PERIOD: Single brooded. May to June. STATUS: Resident. Local in the south. |
