ADULT: Wingspan 28-34mm. The forewings are a
a nice warm greyish-brown with occasional lilac tinges and dark brown
cross-bands with a dark brown triangular patch near the wing tip.
Hindwings are brownish becoming darker towards the basal area with the
outer half orange-yellow with black markings. CHRYSALIS: Overwinters as a cocoon in plant debris. LARVA: July and August on trefoils and clovers. BEHAVIOUR: Day flying often settling for long periods. HABITAT: Woodland clearings and damp meadows. FLIGHT PERIOD: Single brooded. May to June. STATUS: Resident. Common southwards becoming
more local towards the north. |
