ADULT: Wingspan - 37 - 45 mm. An icy grey moth with 3 distinct bands across the forewings. The key to correct identification is the basal crossband which is slighly angled towards the leading edge and is much more sharper in the similar Lesser Treble Bar. CHRYSALIS: Pupates underground. LARVA: Overwinters in this stage and feeds on various species of St Johns Wort. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light. HABITAT: Open woodland, cliffs, coastal grassland, field margins, scrub. FLIGHT PERIOD: 2 seperate broods in the south from late May to early August. One brood in the north from July to August. STATUS: Resident and common. Rare in the Channel Islands.
