ADULT: Wingspan 32-42 mm. A pale buffish moth with distinct white longitudinal stripes and an obvious black basal streak from which the moth gets its name. The hindwings are a dirty grey with a whitish fringing. CHRYSALIS: Found underground. LARVA: Overwinters in this stage. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light and sugar. HABITAT: Fens, marshes, damp grassy areas and damp woodland. FLIGHT PERIOD: Single brooded. June to July. STATUS: Resident and common throughout southern Britain. |
